5083 6061 6082 aluminum plate for marine containers

Regular alloys for marine container aluminum plates include 6082, 6061 and 5083. Tempers are O, T4, T6 and T651. 5083 is also known as a marine grade aluminum material, quiet different from 5052, which is not a marine material in strict definition. The main alloy element in 5083 aluminum sheet plate is magnesium which has good corrosion resistance, weldability and medium strength. 5083 is used for marine building like containers not because of its strong corrosion resistance, but because its particular erosion resistance to ocean water. It’s harder than 5052, but weaker than either 6061 and 6082 aluminum plate sheets. 6082 Al-Mg-Si alloy is a heat treatable aluminum grade with good welding property, corrosion resistance and strength, proving to be excellent as a material for transportation and structural engineering industry. End products include bridges, cranes, roof frames, transporters, transport ships, etc. 6061 has similar properties with 6082. In particular, it has no tendency of stress corrosion cracking, good weldability, corrosion resistance and cold workability, suitable to be anodized and painted with enamel.
